In March 2012, the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) replaced previously existing legislation, providing unitary body archaeologists such as officers of county councils and bodies such as Historic England the ability to impose planning conditions to mitigate damage to heritage resources during the planning process. The NPPF was revised in July 2018.
