Archaeological and Built Heritage Services

Thanks for checking out our Services page – we hope we can be of help to you with your project! Our archaeological and heritage solutions can be divided into nine categories:

Archaeological evaluation

  • Evaluation trenching and test-pitting (usually pre-application, pre-determination or pre-commencement in the planning process). The excavation of one or more trenches or pits to see what’s in the ground.

Archaeological monitoring

  • Monitoring schemes, otherwise known as watching briefs (usually required as a post-determination condition in the planning process) are undertaken during the scheme’s groundworks and involve an archaeologist monitoring works and recording archaeological remains if and when they are found.

Excavation

Historic Building Recording

  • Historic Building Recording projects, occasionally known as Archaeological Building Recordings are undertaken to provide a record of a building of historic interest, providing a snapshot of the structure and fabric as existing at the time of the survey. Depending on the survey level required, the project may also involve surveying the plans and elevations of the building and extensive research into the history and usage of the structure. These projects are usually undertaken as a pre-commencement/post-determination condition in the planning process or as the result of Listed Building Consent.

Historic landscape survey

  • Historic Landscape Recording projects are undertaken to identify and locate archaeological and other heritage assets within the landscape, whether it be to assess a known archaeological landscape prior to development, or again assess a landscape for elements such as tree planting. Depending on the level of survey required, these schemes usually come with an archaeological desk-based assessment element as well as metric GPS location of features with a GIS output.

Community projects

  • Community Archaeology Projects are those existing outside of the planning system, usually as a private research project where community members and/or volunteers form the core of the project team. Vindomora Solutions Ltd can provide specialist supervisory support for community projects throughout the North East of England and the Scottish Borders. We have two community projects running later in 2023, check our updates page for information.

Desk-based Assessment

  • Archaeological desk-based assessment, sometimes known as an archaeological desktop study is a staple requirement within the planning process at the pre-application or pre-determination stage. A DBA brings together the known archaeological and historical background of a site, locally and in a wider context and sets out the potential for the scheme to impact on below-ground remains. Note though as well as the research element, a DBA requires a site visit and visits to relevant archives. Such an assessment will also usually form the core of an Archaeological or Heritage Impact Assessment.

Illustration and Reporting

  • We undertake our own traditional pen and ink artefact illustrations in house, ranging from pottery profiles, small finds, to architectural fragments. We can also undertake 3D photogrammetric modelling of artefacts to enhance the record, as well as produce scaled digital version via CAD or other drawing package.
  • All of our reports are undertaken to specific requirements and standards set by the relevant Local Authority as well as the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists and Historic England. Rather than use non-intuitive software, we use desktop-publishing software to always ensure the highest standard and PDF compliance.

Publication

  • In 2023, Vindomora Solutions Ltd are finally undertaking our first publication, with typesetting timetabled to commence in April/May of this year. Once our first publication is completed, this service will open to a wider audience and more information will be included here.

Its amazing what can be found in modern clearance cairns (piles of stone cleared from the local area by farmers/landowners). The Long Stone on Longstone Hill, Northumberland. The 1866 mapping shows the stone, but it does not appear in the Northumberland County Council Historic Environment Record for the area. The stone lies north of a Bronze Age funerary cairn field (Scheduled).
